CPU’s Signing of Memorandum of Understanding with Universities from the United States and EU

In order to reinforce International research cooperation in education of disaster prevention and rescue, the president of Central Police University (CPU), Tiao, Chien-sheng, accomplished the signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding with the Hellenic Fire Academy on March 8th, 2017. It is the second Memorandum of University that CPU has made with the universities from the EU. Like CPU, Hellenic Fire Academy has similar characteristics in fostering the fire police cadres, granting degrees and offering graduate school courses.

CPU completed the signing of Memorandum of Understanding with Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Institute of Technology on Feb. 16th, 2017. Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Institute of Technology, established in 1976, was formerly called Kavala Institute of Technolog. After numerous evolutions and renaming, it is now officially named EMaTTech. It is situated in the Kavala bay of Eastern Macedonia, and has 4 institutes and 13 graduate schools. It is an active school in searching opportunities to cooperate with universities and industries all around the world and has have lots of successful cases of industry-university cooperation.

In recent years, EMaTTech has established cooperative relationships with Hellenic Fire Academy and Hellenic Police Academy. EMaTTech and HFA also offer the graduate course of Analysis and Management of Manmade and Natural Disasters. This reflects their long-term planning and development in the domain of fire prevention. Recently, EMaTTech has worked with HFA to apply for a scholarship of INTERNATIONAL JOINT GRADUATE DEGREES AND RESEARCH PROPOSAL. Furthermore, EMaTTech intends to set up a graduate school of fire prevention with the help of CPU’s Graduate School of Fire Prevention. CPU’s graduate student of fire prevention are welcomed to obtain its double master degree in EMaTTech. This will deepen the cooperation academically in all three schools.

President of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Institute of Technology, Dr. Nikolaos Katopodes, Vice president, Dr. Dimitrios Emmanouloudis, and the dean of Hellenic Fire Academy, Dr. Michail Chalaris visited CPU on Sep. 9th, 2016. President Tiao welcomed them in person and exchanged souvenirs. Afterwards, the students of fire prevention department and Fire academy department commenced an academic exchange, which laid a foundation for future cooperation. Vice president, Dr. Dimitrios Emmanouloudis, is now the Chairholder of Con‐E‐Ect UNESCO Chair on Conservation and Ecotourism of Riparian and Deltaic Ecosystems and has outstanding reputation in the field of environment ecology and sustainable fire prevention.

CPU has actively expands its international exchange program in recent years. On Dec. 16th, 2016, CPU completed the signing of Memorandum of Understanding with Oklahoma State University. Meanwhile, the director of “Fire and Disaster Prevention/Rescue International Exchange Program”, Dr. Marten Willem Brienen from Oklahoma State University, was invited to make academic exchanges in CPU. He also welcomed CPU graduate student of fire and disaster prevention/rescue to obtain the double master degree in the department of politics of Oklahoma State University. This will deepen the cooperation of academic research on disaster prevention/rescue between the 2 schools.

After the signings of Memorandum of Understanding with the universities from US and EU in the field of disaster prevention and rescue, CPU will promote academic cooperation to continuously make in-depth exchanges. Moreover, this can improve professional knowledge in the field of policing, technology and disaster prevention to respond the challenge of the new environment of globalization.
